The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
